7 Essential Tips to Kickstart Your Productivity in 2024

#productivity continuous learning goal setting Jan 09, 2024

As we welcome a new year, it can be hard to shift our focus back to productivity and efficiency. The transition from a restful break to the busyness of work can be challenging.

So what are you going to do to start the new year off on the right foot and make sure you have your best year ever?

What will make the difference between actually achieving your goals and them falling by the wayside as unfulfilled resolutions?

In this blog, we’ll share insightful tips and tricks to help you dive back into your productivity zone with energy and purpose. We want to get you thinking and to inspire you to achieve more than ever before.

A little overwhelmed? Then start small, focusing on just one thing you want to accomplish!

1. Set Clear, Measurable Goals:

Begin by setting clear and realistic goals for the year; we call these our EGGs (Extraordinary Glorious Goals). Be specific. Instead of “increase sales.” use the simple 'X + Y by When' equation, where X is the starting point, Y is the finish line: “increase sales from £10k to £15k by March 31.” Your EGGs and then be broken down into smaller, manageable tasks to ensure you achieve your goals and avoid feeling overwhelmed.

2. Have a Plan:

A well-structured plan is your roadmap to success. With your goal as the focus, outline your key objectives and the tasks needed to achieve them. Keep track of your progress by using apps or digital tools (and share with colleagues to ensure everyone's on the same page!) After a break, re-establishing a routine is crucial. Get into the habit of planning both your workdays and homelife to maintain a healthy work-life balance. Remember, it's a marathon not a sprint!

3. Prioritise and Organise:

Not all tasks are of equal value and importance. Use our Time Grid to prioritise tasks based on their urgency and importance. This will help you focus on what truly matters and avoid wasting time on less important activities and distractions. As the saying goes, 'cluttered space, cluttered mind'. Whilst it might seem counter-intuitive, spending time organising your workspace not only improves focus but also makes it easier and faster to find things. Don't forget that your workspace is also digital, so take the time to detox your inbox, organise your files and back-up your system.

4. Rule Your Technology:

Love it or hate it, tech rules our lives.  Trello, Slack, Teams are great for boosting your efficiency but it's easy to get distracted by shiny objects, so use the apps and tools that really work for you. Remember, we're trying to enhance productivity, not create more to do!

5. Fighting Fit:

The start of the year is synonymous with resolutions of improved health & fitness. For some, it's a driver, for others, it's a drag. So whilst it's important to get regular physical exercise, it's equally important to pay attention to your mental health. Practices like mindfulness or meditation can significantly boost your focus and overall well-being.

6. Feedback and Reflection:

Unlike those knitted socks from Aunt Dot, feedback is the gift that keeps giving! Don’t hesitate to seek feedback from your colleagues and manager; doing more of the right things and having open communication can spark new ideas and lead to more innovative ways of working. Regularly reflect on your progress and be open to changing course; flexibility is a key driver of productivity.

7. Invest in Yourself:

Last but by no means least is continuous learning to keep you competitive and adaptable. Most organisations will issue a training schedule at the beginning of the year and this is a great time to identify new skills or knowledge areas that can enhance your work. Whilst it's easy to leave it to your manager or HR, remember that it's your responsibility to develop yourself and take charge of your own learning.

A New Year is an opportunity to reset and refocus your approach to work and productivity. By implementing these tips and embracing a mindset of continuous improvement, you can ensure that you not only start the year productively but also maintain that momentum throughout.

Remember, productivity is not about being busy; it’s about being effective. Here’s to a productive and successful new year!
